Meaning:
Kabir says to the mind: understand carefully, O beloved friend.
If you have become a true lover (of God/truth), then why are you sleeping in ignorance?
👉 Message: Don’t be careless or spiritually asleep if you seek truth.
“पाया हो तो दे ले प्यारे
पाय पाय फिर खोना क्या रे?”
Meaning:
If you have truly found something valuable (truth/divine love), then give it away (share, surrender ego).
Otherwise, what is the point of repeatedly gaining and losing it?
👉 Message: Spiritual truth should be stable, not temporary gain and loss.
“रूखा सूखा गम का टुकड़ा
फीका और सलोना क्या रे ?”
Meaning:
Whether life is dry, painful, or tasteless like sorrowful pieces—still it is part of experience.
What is sweet or bitter in reality?
👉 Message: Duality of joy and sorrow is illusion; both are temporary.
“जब अँखियन में नींद घनेरी
तकिया और बिछौना क्या रे ?”
Meaning:
When deep sleep (ignorance) covers your eyes, then what is the use of pillow and bed?
👉 Message: If awareness is lost, comfort is meaningless.
“कहैं कबीर प्रेम का मारग
सिर देना तो रोना क्या रे ?”
Meaning:
Kabir says: the path of love (divine truth) demands surrender of ego (“head” symbolically).
If you are ready to surrender completely, then why cry or fear?
👉 Message: True spiritual path requires ego-sacrifice without hesitation.
This is a spiritual verse attributed to Kabir Das (Kabir Sahib), a प्रमुख संत कवि of the Bhakti movement, expressing the essence of divine love, self-awareness, and detachment from worldly comforts. Through simple imagery like sleep, bedding, and taste, Kabir emphasizes that true spiritual life requires awakening from ignorance, surrendering ego, and remaining steady in the path of devotion without fear or hesitation.
